The Imo State
Transport Corporation (ITC) was on Monday shut down by protesting workers of
the corporation. The workers who were protesting with coffins over their unpaid
salaries and entitlements carried placards with inscriptions such as “Owelle
ndi Igbo, save our soul from Global Ginikanwa” “Emeka Duru, pay us our seven moths salary, our
arrears and go” “My people, my people,
Owelle ndi Igbo, Are ITC people not your people?” Information available to Nigerian Hotline
revealed that the workers are being owed seven months arrears of salaries and
three years arrears of allowances. We further learnt that the workers are also
protesting what they termed as the management of the corporation sitting on
their promotions and resort to sacking of workers unduly.

In a swift reaction
to these allegations the General Manager of ITC Mr Emeka Duru described as
embarrassing, mischievous and an aberration the workers’ claim that they are
being owed seven months arrears of salaries and three years arrears of
allowances, pointing out that the workers are being owed three months arrears
of salaries over which he said he held a meeting with the workers last
Wednesday where it was agreed that payment of the outstanding salaries will
commence on Friday.

According to Mr. Duru payment actually started on Friday but expressed surprise that the workers went ahead to stage a protest on Monday and efforts made to stop them to enable their payment to continue failed. Duru further alleged that some detractors from the opposition are likely behind the protest. According to him one Chuk Okonga who claims to be the Board chairman of ITC had made a threat through a Management staff that he would bring people who will upturn ITC. Duru further alleged that the intent of the protest was to compel the Governor to relieve him of his position but asserted that he would be vindicated. He therefore appealed to ITC workers to end the protest and go back to work so that the payment of their salary arrears which commenced on Friday could continue.
